I received a copy of Realm of Stone and Starlight by C. L. Mecca from NetGalley. It is a romance fantasy book that is the fourth and final book of the Heirs of Elydor series. So, I kind of read it as a standalone because I didn’t know of the first 3 books. I’ll get back to them later, but it didn’t ruin my reading experience. This book follows Terran, heir to the Kingdom of Gyoria, and Lyra, an Aetherian noblewoman.
Terran has spent his life preparing to become the heir of Gyoria. Raised according to his father’s expectations, he has been taught to distrust the Aetherians and consider them enemies. His sense of duty and loyalty therefore leave little room for questioning the beliefs he has inherited. Lyra arrives in Gyoria with an important mission. She needs to find a specific artifact connected to the ancient Aetherian Gate, but accomplishing this becomes increasingly complicated when she crosses paths with Terran. The circumstances bring them closer; this growing attraction becomes impossible to ignore.
A prominent theme in the book is love versus loyalty. Terran and Lyra have been raised to be suspicious of each other’s clans. Plus, their loyalties to different sides make it a little difficult to ignore. Their romance seems like a challenge because it has that forbidden love element to it. Moreover, Terran is torn between loyalty to his father and the rules he has been brought up with and the perspective Lyra brings into his life. Both of them are burdened by expectations about who they should become. Terran is expected to fulfil his responsibilities as an heir, while Lyra has obligations connected to her people and her mission.
The romance between Terran and Lyra plays a part in their character arcs. Terra is heavily influenced by his father in the beginning, but through his relationship with Lyra, he is forced to reconsider his beliefs. His development is therefore not simply a romantic one. He learns that being loyal to his family does not necessarily mean blindly accepting everything he has been taught. On the other hand, Lyra is determined to complete her mission. The vulnerability and trust her relationship with Terran brings is something unexpected for her. She has to figure out what is important to her and her future. I loved how their romance plays out from attraction to trust to growth; it’s wonderful.
Realm of Stone and Starlight by C. L. Mecca has interesting world-building, and the pace of the story is good throughout. The fantasy and romance elements together work really well. I enjoyed the character journeys and the romance between Terran and Lyra. I’ll definitely go back and read the other three books, but I really liked this one.
