Things We Hide from the Light by Lucy Score is a contemporary romance as well as a small town romance. This second book of the Knockemout series focuses on the romance between Nash Morgan, the police chief, and Lina, his brother’s friend. I loved reading the first book, Things We Never Got Over. The appearance of Nash and Lina in the book definitely left me intrigued.
Nash Morgan has always been the good Morgan brother, unlike his brother. When he gets shot, his whole life changes. In the aftermath of the injuries, physically, he is healing, but mentally, he is struggling. One day, his brother’s friend and new neighbour, Lina, sees him at his worst. The things he has hidden from everyone since the shooting. Her approach to him intrigues him, and he feels better around her. Lina and Nash start to come close; their chemistry is palpable from the first moment. They are attracted to each other and, importantly, feel safe around each other, which is unusual for both of them. When Lina’s secrets are revealed, Nash is pissed at her.
Lina is a badass. She is loyal and fierce, but she has walls so high around her that it’s difficult to get close to her. Nash is extremely open about his feelings from the start, while Lina constantly holds back. Her reason for remaining in Knockemout is a secret, but as she starts liking the town and her new friends, it becomes harder to lie about certain things. For Nash, growing up with an addict father meant false promises and lies. Nash does not like to be lied to, and you can understand his reasons. In Lina’s case, she had to grow up fast and felt isolated due to her experiences. She gets used to being alone because she does not want to get hurt. She has major trust issues.
In Lucy Score’s Things We Hide from the Light, Nash and Lina’s romance is a slow burn. They accept their attraction and this strange pull between them, but it takes them a while to get together. There is also a mystery to solve, along with the romance elements, about who is responsible for Nash’s shooting. Sometimes, this subplot takes a complete backseat to the romance. I enjoyed Lina and Nash’s moments. Once they trust each other to discuss their pasts, the walls finally start to come down. I liked how in the second half, Nash and Lina discussed things and established good communication between them as a couple. Their romance is extremely engaging to read. The book was a little longer than I had expected for their story, but it is enjoyable. Plus, the wedding of the previous couple, Naomi and Knox, added to the story.

Overall, I loved reading Things We Hide from the Light by Lucy Score. This small town romance is an interesting and engaging read. The writing is simple, but I enjoyed the character dynamics in the story. Nash and Lina definitely had proper growth arcs with healing and letting go at the centre of it. I enjoyed the glimpses of the next couple and other minor characters. It gave the story a whole found family feel. It’s a good romance to read.
