Book Review: Empress of Fae (Briar Boleyn).

Empress of Fae by Briar Boleyn is the third book of the Blood of the Fae series, continuing the story from Queen of Roses and Court of Claws. The fantasy romance novel picks up the story from where it ended in the second book. Morgan is back in her Kingdom and has to navigate difficulties her brother has created without Draven by her side.

In the second book, Morgan finds out that Draven is her husband. Overwhelmed by this revelation and worried for her brother, she jumps through a portal, landing at Camelot. She is back for the first time since Arthur declared war on their neighbors. Morgan finds new allies, as well as, reunites with the old ones to help her stop the war. She has to play a role in front of her brother and gather as much information as she can about his plans. His second in command sets his sights on her. Now, this fantasy world seems familiar to me, and we get to see a different side to it.

Morgan has to deal with court politics and spy on her brother to help her people be free. She is worried about her younger brother at the front lines. Draven is not going to let Morgan go easily; he will find his back to her. Kairos Draven had promised her that Myntra forces would be at her disposal, and he intends to keep it. Thankfully, Morgan realizes early, that Draven married her to save her life at the end of their quest for Excalibur. Although she did run away from me, she regrets it almost immediately. Draven and Morgan see each other and spend time together in their dreams; it makes sense when you are reading it. Their romance has been important for the story and the character development.

There is a clear character growth for Morgan. She has come so far since her introduction. All her experience with finding Excalibur, surviving at Siabra Fae court, and Draven has given her confidence to take a stand. She is self-assured and not scared of herself or her magic anymore. The only complaint in this book is Morgan and Draven being apart. After the push and pull of the last book, I was hoping that there would be more of them together. But it is limited, mostly to dreams and the climax of the book. He played such an integral part in the last book and for Morgan’s character. Their chemistry, their bond, and their romance are something that draws you in. I love these characters together.

The third book is fast-paced and engaging, just like the first two of the series. Empress of Fae by Briar Boleyn ticked all the boxes for me. The book has fantasy, politics, and romance, with a continuation of the fae version of Arthurian retelling. Though, I want more of Draven and Morgan together. I can’t wait to read the fourth installment of the Blood of the Fae series.
